At a time full of miracles, a king named Kalmamai ruled the local people living in the area called Yenisei. As a genuine hero, he was fair and just in handling affairs. As a result, no one dared to make incursions and local people enjoyed a prosperous and contented life. With the lapse of time, the population ruled by him had been getting on the rise increasingly and thus a tribal alliance consisting of a total of forty nomadic tribes began to come into being finally. Kalmamai named such a tribal alliance “Kirkjoez”(1). He governed all these forty tribes for approximately forty years.
Mamai Khan had five queens and concubines in succession. However, no one was able to give birth to any child for him until he came across a gorgeous widow who had borne many sons and daughters. The king said to himself: “She can probably bear me a son in the future.” Mamai married the woman later on. Just as he expected, the widow gave birth to a son with a high and strong build for the king. The child was as strong as a wolf with green bristles and was named Bodowno. When the boy turned nine, Mamai Khan was taken ill suddenly and passed away before long.

Birth at a Time of Danger and Adversity
The members of the forty tribes got together, holding a funeral for the king in order to pay homage to the deceased king. Bodowno was also present at the funeral. The sage Junltaibas recommended Bodowno for the sake of succeeding to the throne. After the sage’s motion won all the tribesmen’s approval and support, Bodowno ascended the throne. Bodowno did not let anyone down. He governed the ordinary people in a just and proper way so that he won his subjects’ unanimous love and support. However, such a satisfactory situation did not last long. He passed away following several years of reign. His spoiled son Botoy never followed the late king’s art of governing the tribes so that he could not live up to the people’s highest expectations. Naturally, the so-called “Star of Well-being” fell from the sky. And the Kyrgyz ethnic group members had begun to suffer misery from then on.
Unconsciously, a total of 15 generations of people had already elapsed. During the period, a king named Karashi was notorious for his cold-blooded and inhumane hobby to the effect that any person with a pock-marked face should be killed at once whenever he or she was spotted. In a word, the Kyrgyz ethnic group lived a tragic life. The king’s four-year-old son also contracted smallpox unfortunately. What the disease had left the previously handsome prince was nothing but a pock-marked face. Karashi was reluctant to eat his words so that he decided to execute the prince with the pock-marked face after consulting with his ministers. On hearing the king’s decision, a smart and kind-hearted prime minister put forward his suggestion that he would like to take the responsibility of killing the prince. Then, the virtuous prime minister summoned a group of boys and girls together, sending the prince and all these teens off at a tract of remote land full of thickly forested mountains. In addition, he urged them not to come back to their hometown any more before releasing all of them into the wilderness. Moreover, he named each of them “Khirkhiz”(1). The prince tied the knot with a beautiful woman who gave birth to a very handsome boy named Boyon. Eventually, the Kyrgyz people found Boyon who was confirmed to be a lineal descendant of Bodowno in the wake of long-time inquiries all around. The people’s endorsement enabled him to carry on with his heroic ancestors’ exploits. The illustrious name of

Legend of Manas
King Boyon had spread all around since then. The offspring of King Boyon also lived up to the ordinary people’s expectations, enabling the people to live a peaceful and happy life from generation to generation. King Orozdu, a member of one of King Boyon’s later generations, grew up among average persons. The mighty king seemed to be Buddha’s warrior attendant who had already stood up to the rigorous tests of inferno. During his reign, Kyrgyz people were on an equal footing with other ethnic groups.
King Orozdu married five beautiful women. By and by, “King Orozdu’s Five Beauties” had become the household names which were popular with folks. The first wife of King Orozdu gave birth to Jakip and Shigai. The second wife’s sons included Kathan and Katkalong. The third wife bore Junmurgirchi and Balta. The fourth wife’s two sons were named Kasyet and Kalka respectively. And the names of the fifth wife’s sons were Tekeichi and Kyzltai. All the above-mentioned sons of the king were celebrated as “King Orozdu’s Ten Heroes.”
The accomplished King Orozdu ruled the people living on both river banks of the Yenisei. Even the members of the Kara Khitan (1) and Qalmaq (2) ethnic groups who were notorious for cruelty and truculence had no guts to deal assaults to the king’s tribes. As a result, the Kyrgyz population’s yurts skyrocketed to approximately 90,000. And this period was widely considered to be the golden age. However, on the other hand, King Orozdu’s reign was afflicted with a wide range of natural calamities and epidemic diseases which killed a large number of people. Owing to the awful malaria, King Orozdu lost his life as well.
