Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawledunder the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his fingers a time or two. Soon hewas able to change the tire. As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the windowand began to talk to him. She told him thatshe was from St. Louis and was only justpassing through. She couldn’t thank himenough for coming to her aid.

Bryan just smiled as he closed hertrunk. The lady asked how much she owedhim. Bryan never thought twice about beingpaid. This was not a job to him. This washelping someone in need.

He told her that if she really wantedto pay him back, the next time she sawsomeone who needed help, she could givethat person the assistance they needed, andBryan added,“And think of me.”

He waited until she started her car anddrove off. It had been a cold and depressingday, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight.

A few miles down the road the lady sawa small cafe. She went in to grab a bite toeat, and take the chill off before she madethe last leg of her trip home. The waitresscame over and brought a clean towel to wipeher wet hair. She had a sweet smile, onethat even being on her feet for the wholeday couldn’t erase. The lady noticed thewaitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches changeher attitude. The old lady wondered howsomeone who had so little could be so givingto a stranger. Then she remembered.

After the lady finished her meal, shepaid with a 100 bill. The waitress quicklywent to get change for her hundred dollarbill, but the old lady had slipped right out thedoor. She was gone by the time the waitresscame back. Then she noticed somethingwritten on the napkin. There were tears inher eyes when she read what the lady wrote:

“You don’t owe me anything. I have been theretoo. Somebody once helped me out,the way I’mhelping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of loveend with you.” Under the napkin were four more100 bills.

That night when she got home from work andclimbed into bed she was thinking about the money and what the lady hadwritten. How could the lady have known how much she and her husbandneeded it? With the baby due next month,it was going to be hard. She knew howworried her husband was,and as he lay sleeping next to her,she gave him a soft kiss andwhispered soft and low,“Everything’s going to be all right. I love you,Bryan.”

The Parrot Calls for Free

Man,a great man,a fighterfor freedom was traveling in themountains. He stayed in a caravansfor the night. He was amazed that inthe caravans there was a beautifulparrot in a golden cage,continuallyrepeating “Freedom! Freedom!”,and it was such a place that whent h e p a r r o t r e p e a t e d t h e w o r d“Freedom!” it would go on echoingin the valleys,in the mountains.

The man thought: “I have seenmany parrots, and I have thought they mustwant to be free from those cages… but I have never seen such a parrot whose whole day, fromthe morning to the evening when he goes to sleep,is spent in calling out for freedom.” He hadan idea. In the middle of the night, when the owner was fast asleep,he got up and opened thedoor of the cage. He whispered to the parrot,“Now get out.”

But he was very surprised that the parrot was clinging to the bars of the cage. He said tohim again and again,“Have you forgotten about freedom? Just get out! The door is open andthe owner is fast asleep; nobody will ever know. You just fly into the sky; the whole sky isyours.”

But the parrot was clinging so deeply,so hard, that the man said,“What is thematter? Are you mad?” He tried to take theparrot out with his own hands, but the parrotstarted pecking at him,and at the same timehe was shouting,“Freedom! Freedom!” Thevalleys in the night echoed and re-echoed,but the man was also stubborn; he was afreedom fighter.

He pulled the parrot out and threwhim into the sky; and he was very satisfied, although his hand was hurt. The parrot hadattacked him as forcefully as he could, butthe man was immensely satisfied that he hadmade a soul free. He went to sleep.

In the morning,as the man was wakingup,he heard the parrot shouting,“Freedom!

Freedom!” He thought perhaps the parrotmust be sitting on a tree or on a rock. Butwhen he came out,the parrot was sitting inthe cage. The door was open.
