When I came to my senses again I was in adark place. Someone had tied my hands and feet. Iheard a loud noise of water, the wind in the sails, and the seamen’s cries. The whole world was risingand falling. I was sick and dizzy and hurt. My mindwas not clear and at first I could not understand anything.
Then I knew. I was lying somewhere insidethe terrible ship Covenant, and a storm was blowing.
I saw the danger to my life. I was ashamed andangry. I had let my uncle trick me again. I had letthe captain kidnap me. I was a prisoner! All hopeleft me.
How long did I lie in that dark place?I couldnot guess. Day and night were the same. There wasan evil smell, and sometimes rats ran over my face,What was happening? Was the ship breaking on arock?Or was it going down to the bottom of thesea?Sleep came to me at last. but my dreams wereterrible.
A light shone on my face and I awoke. A smallman was looking down at me. He had fair hair andgreen eyes.
“We ll,”he said,“how a re you ?”
I was too weak to answer. The man examinedmy head, and washed the wound in it.
“It ’s a ba d cut,”he said.“Che e r u p,ma n!
Life ’s not ove r ye t. Ha ve you ha d a ny food ?”
I said I could not eat. So he gave me somebrandy and water and went away.
When he came again,I was half asleep, half awake.
I was not sick now,but I was very dizzy. Everypart of my body was aching, too. The ropes onmy hands and feet burnt like fire. I was afraid ofthe rats which were always there.
I was glad when I saw the light. First the manwith the green eyes came down a ladder. He wasfollowed by the captain.
They did not speak. The man examined meand cleaned my wound again. Hoseason watchedand gave me a strange, black look.
“Now,s ir,you c a n s e e ,”said the small man,“ahigh fe ve r,no light,no food . You s e e the me a ning oftha t.”
“I do not s e e the me a ning ,Mr Ria ch ,”the

ropes from my hands and feet. A seaman lifted meon his back and carried me up to the forecastle. Helaid me in a berth, and I lost my senses again.
I opened my eyes at last. The forecastle was awide place in the front of the ship. It was below themain deck. Several scanlen were lying in theirberths. Some were smoking, some resting, somesleeping The day was calm, and the scanlen hole inthe deck above - was open. I was glad that therewas light and air.
When I moved,a seaman brought me someme- dicine. He told me Mr Riach had prepared itfor me.
I lay there for many days until my health returned.
My companions were rough and bad. Theirlife had made them hard, but sometimes they werekind to me. The captain had taken all my money, and had shared it among them. They gave some of itback to me.
I needed the money to help me in America.
My uncle had sent me there to be a slave in thefields.
Sometimes Ransome came in. He showed themarks of many blows. Often Mr Shuan had beatenhim. The first officer was very cruel, but the menrespected him. They said he was the best seaman
on the brig.
It was a very strange thing. Mr Shuan was agood man when he was not drinking. Mr Riach wasa good man only when he was drinking. When hewas not drinking,he did not come near me.
The storm continued. The men were alwayspulling in the sails,or opening them out. It washard work for them. The scuttle in the forecastlewas never open now,and I was a prisoner there. Sothe days passed slowly.
One day Mr Riach came in,and I told him mystory.
“I will he lp you if I ca n ,”he said.“I will ge t youpe n a nd pa pe r a nd in k. You ca n write to Mr Campbe lla nd Mr Ra nke illor. Me a nwhile ,ha ve c oura ge .”
He told me he was a laird ’s son himself. Hewas half a doctor, but he had not finished his examinations.
He had gone to sea instead. I asked himthe reason. He said he just liked fun.
